Entry Requirements:
Applicants should normally have a minimum of 48 UCAS Tariff points, with the majority gained from engineering, mathematics or science-related subjects.

Typical qualifications may include:
• one GCE A Level or Vocational A Level pass, or equivalent;
• two AS Level passes;
• a BTEC National Diploma or Certificate in a relevant subject;
• a recognised Access to Higher Education qualification;
• Scottish Highers, the Welsh Baccalaureate, Irish Leaving Certificate or International Baccalaureate; or
• another equivalent Level 3 qualification.

Applicants should normally hold a Level 3 qualification containing appropriate mathematical content. Relevant industrial experience, professional practice or prior learning may also be considered through Liverpool John Moores University’s Recognition of Prior Learning procedures.

Applicants may be asked to provide evidence of previous study or experience, attend an interview, complete an aptitude assessment or provide references so that their readiness for higher education engineering study can be assessed.

Course Overview

The HNC Aerospace Engineering provides a broad technical foundation for understanding the engineering principles used in aerospace design, manufacture, operation and support.

You will study engineering mathematics, science and data analysis alongside fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, engineering materials and project design. These subjects help you understand how forces, materials, heat, fluids and design decisions affect aerospace components and systems.

The course is suitable for people seeking higher-level technical knowledge for aerospace or related engineering employment, professional development or progression to HND study.

Course Overview

You will develop your ability to:
• apply engineering mathematics, simulation and scientific principles to aerospace-related problems;
• analyse engineering data and use evidence to support technical decisions;
• understand fluid behaviour, thermodynamics, heat transfer and engine principles;
• evaluate the properties and applications of engineering materials;
• contribute to the design, development and evaluation of engineering solutions;
• consider safety, reliability, quality, sustainability and operational constraints; and
• communicate technical information using written, oral, graphical and digital formats.

The approved modules are:
Level 4 modules
• Introduction to Engineering Mathematics and Simulation
• Engineering Science and Data Analysis
• Project Design & Build
• Fluid Mechanics
• Thermodynamics, Heat Pumps & Engines
• Engineering Materials

Additional Information

Successful completion provides 120 credits at Level 4. You may then apply to progress to the corresponding HND Aerospace Engineering, subject to the entry requirements and continued availability of the progression route.

Some modules include practical or competency-based requirements. Where these apply, the required competence must be demonstrated before the associated credit can be awarded.

Any confirmed additional costs, including course-specific personal protective equipment or materials where applicable, will be explained before enrolment.

How is the course delivered?

This course is delivered part-time over 18 months through face-to-face teaching at Accrington or Nelson Campus, depending on the confirmed course offering. Timetabled teaching is normally spread across two days. Learning includes lectures, laboratory and workshop activity, simulation and data-analysis tasks, tutorials, design work and guided independent study.

How my learning will be assessed?

Assessment may include engineering calculations, technical reports, laboratory and practical investigations, design work, portfolios, presentations, simulation activity, tests and examinations. Formative exercises and tutor feedback provide opportunities to practise methods and improve work before final assessment.

Course Facilities

Depending on the confirmed campus and modules being studied, facilities may include engineering laboratories and workshops, fluid-mechanics and thermodynamics equipment, materials-testing facilities, CAD and simulation software, data-acquisition tools and equipment used for practical design and testing activity.

You will also have access to Moodle, Microsoft Teams, library resources, higher education study spaces and academic, careers, wellbeing and student-support services. The facilities assigned to your course offering will be confirmed before enrolment.

Potential Careers

The course can support technical employment and progression within aerospace, aviation manufacturing and related engineering sectors.

Depending on your experience and individual employer requirements, relevant roles may include:
• aerospace or aeronautical engineering technician;
• aircraft manufacturing or production technician;
• materials, structures or testing technician;
• engineering design or CAD technician;
• quality, inspection or technical-support role;
• maintenance-planning or engineering-support technician.

Completion does not qualify you to certify aircraft airworthiness or carry out regulated licensed aircraft-maintenance functions unless you separately meet the relevant regulatory and employer requirements.
