Students hoping to reach £300 target after getting muddy for charity!

They made it through a 5k muddy obstacle course in the name of charity – and now ladies from Nelson and Colne College are hoping to reach their £300 target.

Team NCC, which consisted of students and staff from College, successfully completed the Pretty Muddy event in Preston this month for Cancer Research UK.

The group, who were among thousands donning pink at the annual fund-raising event, were brought together by College Sport Maker Alexis Walker, who has been delivering an array of activity programmes throughout the academic year, including running, walking and multisport sessions.

Alexis said: “Our team of Pretty Mudders currently study Hairdressing and Childcare at NCC. This link with curriculum areas provides opportunities for students to come together as part of their study programme and participate in sport to promote the fundamental values of improving communication, confidence, and teamwork, as well as learning new skills.

“To engage these students in physical activity and see them coming together for a challenge many would have never contemplated before has been amazing. The students took it upon themselves to raise money alongside their physical challenge, so it would be fantastic to see them reach their target of £300.”

The opportunity for students to engage with the Pretty Muddy event arose as a result of Lancashire Sports Partnership support and Sportivate funding. The funding became available after feedback from England Athletics and Sport England Youth Insight showed that training for a charitable event/ challenge helps sustain participation beyond the event/challenge itself.

Emily Murray, 18, a Level 2 Hairdressing student, said: “It was absolutely amazing! I had such a good laugh with everybody. I did it for my granddad, who has got cancer.”
