Nelson and Colne College (NCC), part of East Lancashire Learning Group (ELLG), has announced the launch of Marsden Medics, a new collaborative programme with Marsden Heights Community College and The Hyndburn Academy to support ambitious pupils who aspire to careers in medicine and healthcare.
The partnership was unveiled at a launch event attended by 20 pupils who met the experts behind the initiative, including Dr Nelson from The Hyndburn Academy, Miss Afzal from Marsden Heights, NCC’s Kirsten Graham, Head of Division for Science, Maths and Computer Science, and Aqil Javed, Curriculum Leader for Sciences.
Students will embark on an exciting and informative pathway that includes college visits, meetings with medical professionals, university trips, and tailored support through their application process, creating a clear route from secondary school to college, university and professional careers.
Nelson and Colne College alumnus Aqil Javed plays a key role in the programme as a mentor. A former Marsden Heights Head Boy, Aqil progressed through NCC’s A Level Sciences before graduating in Biomedical Science from the University of Bradford and returning to the college to teach.
Reflecting on his involvement, he said: “It is fantastic to return to Marsden Heights and give pupils access to this type of opportunity, widening access for those seeking a pathway to Medicine.”
Mrs Ross, Careers Lead for both schools, added: “Myself and the team were highly impressed by the quality of pupil applications received, reflecting their determination and passion for the medical field.”
The programme builds on NCC’s strong track record in science education and pre-professional pathways. This summer, 17-year-old Sai Chinmayee from Nelson achieved A grades in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics, and is taking a gap year before studying Medicine at the University of Cambridge. She gained valuable experience shadowing a doctor at the Royal Blackburn Hospital during her time at college.
The Marsden Medics initiative closely aligns with ELLG’s mission to deliver industry-relevant education and exceptional career readiness. As the number one college in the country for A-level progress and the only FE college to be rated Outstanding for 20 consecutive years, the group continues to set national standards in educational excellence. In 2025, it reinforced this commitment with a £2 million investment in its Health and Social Care Industry Innovation Hub, further cementing its position as a centre of excellence for the next generation of healthcare professionals.
