“If I can do it, anyone can.”

For Mya-Mae Thorpe, education at East Lancashire UC has been deeply personal. After losing her father to addiction, she pursued a Foundation Degree in Alcohol and Substance Misuse to better understand and support others facing similar challenges.“I wanted to work in the field and understand more about how addiction works.”

With motherhood, pregnancy and ADHD, Mya-Mae had a lot of work ahead of her, but she thrived with the encouragement of her tutor, Ian Pickering. “If it wasn’t for Ian, I don’t think I’d have achieved what I’ve achieved. That connection with the college was so important.” Mya-Mae is now studying a bachelor’s degree, with a focus on supporting families and male prisoners affected by addiction.
